Education is the key to success. This is an assertion with which everyone is likely to agree nowadays; in fact it has become a truism.
Indeed, it’s very hard to imagine how one can succeed today without proper education, whether you measure success narrowly in terms of material wealth or more generally in terms of being satisfied with yourself and your life. The world we inhabit is growing more and more complex all the time so education and intelligence, which enable us to make sense of it, are of utmost importance. Evidently, no one can expect to be able to build a successful career and achieve their goals pertaining to material affluence if they’re lacking in profound education. Education as the key to material success is of special relevance today also because any human society which can justly claim the epithet of “advanced” is based on meritocracy, that is in such societies your abilities and not your birth determine your station in life.
However, opening the road to success defined as tangible wealth is not the sole function of education. More importantly, it gives us knowledge, it makes us mature, intelligent and appealing to the people around us. Education allows one to live a full-fledged and interesting live. It inspires self-confidence and makes one content with himself. An educated person feels powerful because, as Francis Bacon famously said, knowledge is power. Indeed, knowledge can rightly be considered an end in itself. And this has always been the conviction of the most prominent people, among whom Bias of Priene perhaps should be specially mentioned for his winged saying “I carry all my things with me”, meaning his knowledge was all he needed.
Those who neglect education do so to their own detriment, they doom themselves to perpetual confinement within regrettably narrow limits of their mental horizons. To paraphrase the famous saying of Jesus, for what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but fails to get an education?
