1. In the first sentence by saying "he was a very-human looking". It is difficult for the reader to take the hint because it is not said straight on. It's just an unusual thing to call someone: wouldn't a human automatically be human-looking? That hints at Dofan not being one, although there's not enough proof and statements to say so for sure.
2. Dofan was a spy and his mission was to get information. He made the mistake of letting the mayors daughter, Betty Fuller, believe they were in love, hoping she would tell him something useful. But they have been caught and Dofan has been thrown into jail, discovered as a spy and assigned with an execution. There was a chance of him getting out of it if he used Buffys fathers influence but he decided against it. He contacted his people and got to talk to his brother who hinted that he might need to sacrifice himself for the success and victory of his people. Dofan had time to himself to think and when his commander connected him he was sure with his decision to sacrifice himself, later wishing he had more lives to do so instead of only one.
3. It's hard to say if Betty was truly in love with Dofan. Although her reaction to him being harsh does say something. She was a big influence, she was supposed to be the one to give him information he needed but instead she was the one to reveal his identity of a spy and get him executed, basically. He didn't love her back, he just wanted to use her.
4. First of all it was Dofans brother who suggested it, telling him that they were close to winning and this might have been the last step to victory. Dofan realized his country needed a hero and he was proud to become it. That is also why he refused to be rescued.
