An autumn day in a small park in the centre of our town.

It's three o'clock in the afternoon of a cold, grey and sad autumn day. School is over and we take a trolley-bus to the centre of our town. Cathedral Square. It is the best starting point for a guided tour of Vladimir. There are two marvellous cathedrals near the square. We can see their white carved-stone walls as we get off the trolley-bus.

Not long ago crowds of tourists filled the square, now very few tourists come to Vladimir, the economic and political situation in Russia discourages them.

We walk across the square. Old women are hurrying to the Assumption Cathedral for the midday service. They are carefully, avoiding one part of the square, which doesn't look any different from the vast grey space of asphalt. Before the Revolution of 1917 there was a small chapel there, it was destroyed. Church-goers try not to walk over this place. We are not superstitious, so we cross the square and enter the only alley of a small park near the
Cathedral.

We are now walking along the alley of lime-trees, poplars andmaples. The asphalt pass is cracked, there are puddles of water and lots of fallen leaves. It snowed yesterday but the snow melted as soon as it touched the ground. The trees are almost bare, the trunks and branches are wet and look much darker than on sunny days. When we step on drier leaves, they whisper under our feet. But in the puddles these autumn leaves have an unpleasant look of mould.

There are some broken benches in the alley. The paint is gone. They look untidy, uninviting. It is difficult to imagine that some years ago everything was bright and clean. People used to walk here listening to a band playing on a small wooden platform among the trees. The alley is deserted now, there's nothing attractive in it.

The damp air is still when we come to the observation platform at the end of the alley. It is rather large covered with cracked asphalt. There used to be a large round flower-bed in the middle. Now we can see only brown earth soaked with icy water and decaying weeds. The railing of the observation platform is broken.

Standing on top of the highest hill in Vladimir at the edge of the platform we can see the Klyazma river winding below and the vast space of empty fields stretching far away up to the dark forests of pine and fir trees. Dark colours prevail.

The clouds grow thicker and it starts drizzling. The weather is in perfect harmony with an autumn feeling of loneliness. We turn away from the breathtaking view of enormous fields and distant forest and walk back along the alley. How we all miss summer when it's warm and sunny and there is no school!

On our way back we notice a young couple sitting on a frame of a broken bench. They are talking quietly, holding hands and looking at each other. They are too absorbed in themselves to pay attention to the drizzling rain and don't realise how ugly the place looks with rubbish under the bushes. We pass by silently wishing them
happiness. Long live autumn romance!
