При переводе прямой речи в косвенную возможны два варианта: 1) когда слова говорящего вводятся фразой he sais (он говорит) - в этом случае времена глаголов не изменяются; 2) или he said (он сказал) - тогда происходит так называемый "сдвиг времен"
