Through Saturn's rings

It's a plain fact that humans can marvel for only so long. A little amazement, and we're ready to get right back to the business of ordinary life. On oct. 15, 1997, few people paid attention on the launching of the rocket carrying the Cassini spacecraft. It was just another launching, after all.
But after nearly seven years of queit voyaging through the solar system, with virtually no attention from the rest of us, Cassini has made its way to a place where we will all begin to marvel once more . Last week, the spacecraft crossed the plane of Saturn's rings, and radio signals received shortly after midnight indicated that it had become the first exploring vehicle to orbit Saturn. Cassini was on track to send pictures back to Earth.
Those pictures are just the scenic portion of a potential trove of new date about most things Saturnian. Like the other date, they will remind us of what an extraordinary object Saturn, that strange gaseous planet, really is.
If you've ever looked through a telescope and seen Saturn's rings, you immediately understand the impact they had nearly 400 years ago on Galileo, who was the first to view them. Sometimes we see them edge-on, and sometimes they cut a broad swath across Saturn's orb.
The effect of that change in aspect through a telescope is to give Saturn a three- dimensional presence- a reality, in fact - that the other planets in the solar system seem to lack. Saturn and its rings have become staples of our imagination, and with luck they are about to be reimagined before our eyes.
And there is more to come. On Christmas Eve, the Huygens craft will separate from Cassini and, after three weeks adrift, will plunge into the atmosphere of the largest of Saturn's moons, Titan, an atmosphere made up mostly of nitrogen and methane.
These may seem like familiar accomplishment - after all, two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, are still digging away on Mars. But each piece of date that makes its way back to Earth from the outer solar system is something to marvel at, if only because Cassini - an international mission costing $3 billion - may be the last of its kind, now that a new austerity in space exploration has set in.
