Harry discovered a talent for flying on broomsticks and became a member of the Quidditch team.
Harry and his friends faced many dangers, overcome lots of difficulties and had a plenty of wonderful adventures.

простое прошедшее время. То есть: он играл, он говорил, он делал.
Получается если в конце глагола окончание ed. Или если глагол неправильный то вторая колонка таблицы неправильных глаголов где написано past simle.
Если тебе надо описать внешность в прошедшем времени то так и пиши:
Он был полковник в отставке. Но его дочь похитили. Он клал бревно на плечо и уходил раскидывать злодеев.
He was a retired colonel. But his daughter was kidnapped. He put a log on his shoulder and went to scatter the villains.
