The old man had a pet - a bird. He loved it dearly and took good care of it. He gave it bread and water every morning and every night.
One day he went to the market to buy some food. He asked his wife to look after the bird. But the old woman didn't give the bird anything to eat and drink. The bird was hungry and thirsty. It saw some bread on the table and ate the bread. The woman became angry and threw the bird out of the window.
When the old man came back he couldn't see the bird. He went to the forest to look for his dear friend. Suddenly he saw it in the tree. The bird didn't want to come back but it thanked the man and gave him two baskets.
The old man took the small basket and went home. When the old woman opened the basket and saw that it was full of gold she ran to the forest too and asked the bird to give her a basket too. The little bird gave her two baskets. The woman took the big basket and went home. She opened it and saw only yellow leaves in it!
