she is dead. he whispered - He whispered that she was dead.

why did you do it& asked the general. - The general asked why he had done it.
i loved her - The rebel (???) answered that he had loved her.

but how then did he get the scar? l asked at last - I asked at last how he had got the scar then.

oh. that was due to a bottle that burst when he was opening it. A bottle of ginger ale.
l never liked it said i.- I said that it had been due to a bottle that had burst when he had been opening it. It had been a bottle of ginger ale that I had never liked.
