Tyumen State Oil and Gas University, the former Industrial Institute, was set up in 1963 to
meet the needs of our region in specialists.
The history of our university is interesting and important. It was one of the first higher
institutions solving the problem of specialists in our region. Gas deposits and oil fields were
discovered in Tyumen region in the beginning of 1960-s. The prospects of oil and gas
developments and the necessity of specialists training appeared. The Council of Ministry of
Russian Federation and the Ministry 6f Higher and Special education of the USSR took a
decision to establish Industrial Institute in Tyumen. This led to another problem: there
were no teachers, no teaching staff in the Institute. It was decided that this future
Industrial Institute should be based on the branch of Ural Polytechnic Institute.
Now it is one of the largest higher educational institutors in the region. It train specialists
in 50 specialties and directions. Since 1963 the institution has prepared many specialists,
40 thousand students are being trained now at the University. (
Today the staff of the University consists of highly qualified specialists. They established
scientific schools and directions, which have close links with industry and have great
opportunities to test and check their theoretical ideas in practice. More than 400 specialists
take part in scientific research activities. The University has 9 scientific - research
institutions: energetic and energy saving of oil and gas complex, hydrogeology and
engineering geology, sociology and others. Now there are more than 50 chairs in the
University and about 700 teachers work there. Among them there are 95 doctors of
science.
The University has a great number of branches in the North and some of them in the South
of our region: in Surgut, Nizhnevartovsk, Novyi Urengoi, Ishim, Tobolsk and other towns of
Tyumen region.
The University consists of 5 Institutes: the Institute of Geology and Geophysics,
Technological Institute, the Institute of Transport, Oil and Gas Institute, Institute of
Management. For those who combine work and study there is a correspondent department.
The students have all conditions to study well: there is a library and some reading-halls,
where students have an opportunity to prepare for their seminars and practical lessons.
The out-of-town students live in a hostel, most of students get scholarship. There are
many well-equipped laboratories and workshops at the University, such as: physics,
foreign languages, chemical laboratories, the laboratories of strength of materials and
other. Large and light classrooms, computer-classes, a canteen, cafe-bars, sport-gyms are
there at the student's disposal.
The academic year is divided into two terms and begins in September and ends with the
winter exams in December-January. Then comes a recess in February. The second
semester also ends with exams.
The curriculum provides for different form of study: lectures, seminars, practical work. In
addition to the obligatory lectures there are also the so-called optional lectures. These
concern some specialized subjects, which the student can choose on his own, according to
his inclinations, such as higher mathematics, physics, descriptive geometry, foreign
language, physical training and many other subjects.
Students have a rest twice a year: a month in summer and a fortnight in winter. Each
summer students have practice at different enterprises of Tyumen region.
Training course lasts 5 years, at the end of it students submit graduation papers. After
graduation from the University young specialists work at different enterprises, plants and
research institutes of our country.
