В первом - Past Simple - во втором - Past Perfect, если не ошибаюсь (мой инглиш довольно посредственен) . Эти времена отличаются друг от друга тем, что в Past Simple - просто прошедшее время, то, что было, констатация факта. В Past Perfect же - подведение итога прошедшему. Дальше очень просто разобраться...
