Komi live in the vast forests of the Russian North, so their main occupation has historically been woodworking. Wooden were houses and outbuildings, dishes and decorating items.

Russia's Northern areas are famous for overseas, almost cold, with the consequence that virtually every resident of the Komi Republic was able to play the boots and was engaged in tanning (other name – Zemledelie).

Komi women were engaged in pottery. Curiously, for this they did not use a Potter's wheel (and so did everything), preferring the old ribbon-harness method. Roasting dishes took place, of course, in the Russian furnace. Women had to own and patterned weaving: made his own tablecloths, shirts and towels were part of the dowry of the future bride.

Despite the different origins of our peoples, Komi food was traditionally Russian: porridge, soups, meat stews. Fish and meat of wild animals became widespread. Onion, turnip, radish and rutabaga were grown in the gardens, and since the 19th century – potatoes.

Developed was and animal husbandry. It is believed that the Komi bred cattle in the 2nd Millennium BC (at least, this is evidenced by modern archaeological excavations). Sheep and horses, as well as cattle, were kept in the household. The benefits received from animals (wool, milk, meat, etc.) were not sold, but used for their own needs.

Some traditions and customs:

The newlyweds laid on the bed a fur coat made of sheep wool, and before the wedding the bride on her knees put the child, it was believed that such simple manipulations will provide the new family with abundant offspring;
After giving birth for 7 days, the young mother and the baby lived in a stable or bath (depending on where the woman gave birth), because they were considered " unclean»;
A child who reached the age of 1 year, for the first time showed a mirror, cut hair;
