Canada
Canada is a wonderful country with its history, nature and culture. It`s quite a new state, a full member of the world community, which has achieved a great success in science, medicine, travel business and has a renowned educational system. More and more people show their interest in Canada. It`s not only the country`s social progress that tourists are interested in. They look forward to seeing something new, admirable and splendid. There are no prizes for guessing it refers to incomparable sights on the country: the Niagara Falls, Davidson City and marvelous national parks. As for me, I`d like to get acquainted with canyons of the South Nahanni, to feel splashes of theNiagara Falls and to see the beauty of Thousand Islands with my own eyes.
The Niagara Falls is situated in the south-west of Canada at the USA border, in the province of Ontario, 30 kilometers away from Toronto. There are five Great Lakes there: the Michigan, the Huron, the Ontario, the Erie and the Superior. They are the greatest fresh lakes in the world.
As far as it`s known, the name of `Niagara` took its origin from Irokez `Onguiaahra` that means "The Thunder of Water". The thunder of the falls is heard from a great distance, especially at night. So, if you stand near to the Niagara, you are able to hear nobody around.
A beautiful legend connected with the Niagara Falls exists in Canadian mythology. It`s about Virgin of the Mist from the folks of Irokez who lived in those places long ago. The prettiest girl was chosen as Virgin of the Mist and given to Manit, the God who lived in the depth of the falls. They say the girl felt no fear - sogreat was the strength of persuasion. The people believed they would meet the God one day. Once, the daughter of the chief was chosen. He followed her as he couldn`t possibly endure the parting with his child. The tribe is said to have refused this barbarian custom after depriving the best chief.
The beauty of this wonder of nature attracts a lot of tourists all over the world. And many of them consider the most splendid sight of the Niagara Falls to be seen from the Canadian coast.
And I`d like to see its might and beauty of Horseshoe Falls myself most of all. This name really specifies a concave form of the Canadian part of the Falls. Though one can meet its another name - `"The Thunderer". The waters of the mighty river come to the rapids and fall into the depth from the height of a twenty-storey house. The upper part of the water wall seems motionless. Its boiled water is the apotheosis in the lower part. It boils forming gigantic whirlpools. What a magnificentwater dust is above the depth!
And in fine weather sun rays reflect in tiny drops of water and form a splendid rainbow. The play of the elements is so impressive that the huge crowds of tourists look at it for hours without moving.
The Falls looks differently not only within a day but even within a year. In spring and summer a white boiling curtain looks green, in autumn it has crimson colours. Only in winter the edges of the river freeze. Niagara Falls is fierce in early spring when ice is floating. Huge icebergs crash and disappear in the deep. In 1848 the ice of Lake Erie pressed the estuary of the Niagara River so much that the water in the Falls was forced out. In thirty hours water broke the ice. The overthrow of water with rocks of ice looked like the eruption of a volcano and an earthquake.
It is possibly one of the most exciting and picturesque places in the world a man has ever been to. But it`s not only the waterfalls Canada is famous for and attractive to tourists. It is there where one can see all the splendors of nature.
