"The Ugly Duckling" Summary
Once upon a time, an ugly, large duckling was hatched into an otherwise little family of perfect ducks. He was so different looking that the mother thought he might even be a turkey. Even though she felt him large and ugly like everyone else did, the mother duck complimented his ability to swim very well. As he was the last of the brood to hatch, she assumed that it was because he spent so much time in the egg that he had turned out so ugly. On the first outing for the family, the mother duck tried to teach her baby ducklings the way of the pond. The other ducks that were already there pointed out how ugly the largest duckling was. The mother again came to his defense as best as she could. Even with the mother attempting to support him, the ugly duckling was nipped at and pushed around by the other animals. They made fun of his odd, white, plain-looking coloring while everyone else was a pretty duckling yellow. Eventually, it got to be too much for the ugly duckling, and he ran away to escape the abuse.
He then found himself in a large moor with plenty of wild ducks. They pointed out his ugliness, but they did not send him away. While there, some wild geese invited him to fly with them, but shortly after the invitation had been extended, the geese were shot. A dog quickly ran over, and the ugly duckling thought himself surely dead, but the dog ran off without injuring him.
After the chaos at the moor, he ran away but was caught in a storm. Eventually, he found his way to a cottage occupied by a woman, hen, and tom cat. The old woman was pleased because she hoped that the ugly duckling would lay some eggs. The hen and the cat could not understand why the duckling could not purr or lay eggs and wondered why he would love something as silly as swimming so very much. The hen, calling herself a friend to the duckling, advised that he learn how to lay eggs and purr, but the ugly duckling wanted nothing to do with that, so he decided to leave again.
He left and soon found water where he could be happy. In this water, he first spotted the swans but did not know what to call them. Not too far later, the ice of his pond began to take over, and he became unable to swim. Soon, a farmer helped him break the ice and took the ugly duckling home to thaw out. However, when the farmer's children wanted to play with the ugly duckling, he got quite upset, caused a ruckus, and found himself out in the hard winter once again.
Somehow, he made it through and found himself once more among rushes. He was happy that it was turning spring and took off in flight, seeing the beauty all around him. But then, he decided to fly to the swans he had so admired before the winter, thinking they may kill him.
Upon arriving, he hung his head, waiting to die, but then, he saw his own reflection. He was no longer ugly. He had grown into a beautiful swan. The swans told him that he is a swan too, and they accepted him like he had never been accepted before.
