Russia is a country with many international links. It is a member of such organizations as the UN, the Commonwealth of Independent States, the G8 and many others. What is more, Russia trades with many countries, especially Germany, Italy, China, Ukraine, Belarus, Finland, Brazil and others.

Education is an important industry in Russia. There are about 7 million students who attend more than 1300 institutions of higher education in the country. About 10,000 foreign students study in Russia at the moment, half of them at Moscow State University.

There is a great number of mass media outlets in Russia, for example the Voice of Russia that broadcasts in 33 languages, The Moscow Times which is an English language daily, The Moscow News which is an English language weekly. Almost everyone has heard of Russia Today, an international English language news channel.

Russia is famous for its literature. 5 Nobel Prize winners were Russian. They are Ivan Bunin, Boris Paster nak, Mikhail Sholokhov, Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and Iosif Brodsky. The list of top twenty popular works among leading foreign writers includes Leo Tolstoy's "Anna Karenina" and "War and Peace", Fyodor Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" and Anton Chekhov's plays.

Russia has greatly contributed to music as well. A lot of worldwide recognised composers were Russian. We can name Mikhail Glinka, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Dmitry Shostakovich among them. Russian operas and ballets like Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, War and Peace, Romeo and Juliet, Eugene Onegin have been staged abroad with great success.

Russia is also famous for scientific and technological inventions as well as great achievements in space exploration. There have been 15 Russian Nobel Prize winners in Science this far.

Russian cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg are famous throughout the world. Everyone knows of the Hermitage, the Tretyakov Picture Gallery and the Bolshoi Theatre. Russia attracts 3 million tourists a year.
