On May 8, 1945, the historic protocol on the unconditional surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II was signed in Berlin.
The document was delivered to Moscow late at night, and already at 2 a.m. Yuri Levitan announced on the radio the order of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief, who was then Stalin, about the victory of the Soviet Union over the Hitlerite invaders.
This news instantly spread throughout the country. Already at 3 a.m., excited people took to the streets of Moscow and other cities, who joyfully greeted each other with the long-awaited news, hugged and cried with happiness. Those who did not wait for their relatives from the war had tears of sorrow in their eyes.
In honor of this event, a grandiose festive salute was held in Moscow at 22 o'clock, which was fired by 30 artillery volleys.
On June 24, 1945, a solemn parade dedicated to the Great Victory Day was held on Red Square. This happened exactly four years after the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
