Long time ago, at the beginning of the 20th century lived in Russian Empire wonderful man and outstanding wrestler Ivan Poddubny.Firstly he was a peasant in village Bogoduhovka near Poltava, then worked as a fitter in Feodosiya and Sebastopol. One day on Saturday he went into circus to see wrestling. And during the circus show happened the following:
One famous,dexterous and strong wrestler from abroad put his rival on the shoulder and proposed to wrest with him anyone of spectators.Poddubny agreed to do this.Firstly he had prevailed but later foreign wrestler outwitted him (by applying unfamiliar technique trick) and put him on the shoulder.
This failure gave Poddubny an important lesson.He started to study art of fighting deeply and seriously.Started to train intensively, think better than his opponents.
No one of wrestlers could defeat him since those time.
He died undefeated on 8 August 1949, in the town of Yeysk, in the Kuban region in Southern Russia.He is buried there under inscription on his tumbstone: "Here lies a Russian hero". There is a museum of Poddubny and sporting school (named in honour of him) in Yeysk.
