1. There are a lot of animal shelters in Spain looking after abandoned pets, one of them – The Mona Foundation in Girona, Catalonia – cares for rescued chimpanzees.
2. Since 2000 it has provided a safe home for chimps which formerly performed in circuses or were used by photographers and film makers.
3. The foundation has specially designed houses, play areas, where the monkeys can run and climb, and even a pond.
4. Although the centre receives funding, it runs on volunteers.
5. Some of these volunteers live locally and come whenever they can spare the time.
6. They help out on fundraising events, do routine maintenance and gardening, advertise the foundationʹs work and visit schools in the community.
7. The others, called «volunteer keepers», stay at the centre for six months and work long hours.
8. Theу collect and prepare the chimpsʹ food and clean their sleeping areas; those who have been working at the centre for a while are given more responsibilities.
9. Sometimes the keepers organise fun activities for the animals.
10. The work of the volunteers is difficult and demanding, but it gives the unique experience of communicating and playing with chimpanzees.
