Awards are only valid for one year. Afterwards they have to be removed if the unit does not qualify for the award again. If a unit won an award and qualified for the same award the next year, the first award is underlined (service stripes). So if a unit bears a triply underlined E, the unit has won the award in four consecutive years. Instead of the letter and four service stripes for winning the award five consecutive times, in the case of the Battle "E", a gold "E" shall be displayed with a silver star above the "E". In the case of the command excellence awards, an "E" and a star of the same color will be shown for the fifth consecutive award, replacing the service stripes. Another star shall be added for each five successive annual awards.

Цвет говорит о том, какая часть (точнее команда) корабля получила награду, буква говорит за что.
Если появляется подчеркивание, значит та же самая награда получается несколько лет подряд. Если же "цепь" прерывается, то символ убирается.
При 5 лет подряд подчерки убираются и появляется звезда над буквой. Через следующие 5 лет еще звезда и так далее.
