This is a story about one young girl who could not read. Her name was Nevada, and she was nineteen years old.She grew up on West with her father who was illiterate as well.
One day Nevada's uncle Jerome receives a letter from his brother saying that Nevada is coming to live with him. Uncle Jerome welcomes Nevada to his hundred-thousand-dollar house. Uncle Jerome had an adopted son, the son of an old friend named Gilbert, who was becoming a successful painter. Another member of the family was Barbara Ross, a step niece.
One day a letter arrived. It was addressed to Nevada. Barbara was the one who brought the letter to Nevada. Pretending to be very busy with her gloves, Nevada asksBarbara to open it an read. And she did. It was a message from Gilbert: "Nevada, come to my studio at mid-night tonight"
Nevada meets Gilbert at the studio and tells that she did as he said in the letter.
Gilbert asks what exactly was in the letter. She repeats the Barbara's words.
Gilbert asks Nevada to merry him, Nevada says "yes".
A happy couple off to church. After the ceremony, Gilbert asks Nevada confess that she cannot read or white a single word. Gilbert asks if Nevada want to know what was in that letter.
-Yes, says Nevada.
-'My dear Nevada, you were right about the flower. It was a hydrangea, and not a lilac.'
