(правда если речь идет о конкретном яблоке, скажем, если собеседник держит его в руке нужно спросить Can I have THE apple? но здесь скорее всего имеется в виду не такой случай)

Это трудно даже мне, преподавателю. Надо думать над каждым случаем употребления минутку-две. А с ходу- халтура.
