Complete the sentences. Be careful with grammar tenses (the past perfect and the past simple)
When Mary arrived at the airport, she saw that the plane … already (take off).

When Mary arrived at the airport, she saw that the plane HAD already TAKEN OFF.
Yesterday he CAME home at nine in the evening.
Nick PLAYED golf yesterday, he HAD NEVER PLAYED golf before.
Если предложение начинается со слова When, Yesterday и т. д. т. е. идет разговор об уточнении времени, то используется past simple.
past perfect в предложении сообщает, что действие было совершено, но когда именно это было сделано - не уточняется. Пример : I have been to Paris. Я была в Париже ( но когда именно, я не уточняю.
Для уточнения как-раз и используется past simple
