Есть ли смысл на мать ASUS P5B ставить Core 2 Duo E8600?

Мать не такая и старая, 965 чипсет был одним из самых удачных.
Ставь проц и еще пару лет комп будет актуален.
У самого P5B-E стоит, а я профи в железе.

Если она поддерживает такие процы, то она далеко не старая, хотя и не новая.
По сравнению с новыми материнскими платами под LGA775 вы потеряете в производительности всего лишь несколько процентов.
А вот настоящей глупостью будет покупка Core 2 Duo E8600, т. к. 2010-ый не для двух-ядерников -- многие игры сейчас будут хотеть 3-х и 4-х ядерных процессоров.
Покупать сейчас надо проц (для игр) хоть самый дешёвый, но обязательно 3-х или 4-х ядерный, они будут стареть гораздо медленнее, чем двух-ядерные.

Какие например последствия могут быть.... сам то подумай... если производители предусмотрели такой процессор....
