REPORTED SPEECH 1
Compare the two sentences;
Direct : Tom said‚ "I am feeling ill"
Reported : Tom said (that) he was feeling ill.
a) Reported statements with no tense change:
When the main verb of the sentence is present‚ perfect or future‚ there is no change of tense in the reported statement.
Examples:
He says‚ "I am ill". – He says (that) he is ill.
He will say‚ "I am not going" – He will say (that) he isn’t going.
He has said‚ "I have got a new car".
– He has said (that) he has got a new car.
TELL has a personal direct object (e.g. me‚ him‚ etc.)
SAY never has a personal direct object.
She says‚ "I’m going to be late‚ mother."
– She tells her mother (that) she is going to be late.

Write these sentences in indirect speech‚ using the words given. Remember to change the pronouns where necessary.

b) Reported Statements with a change of tense.
When the main verb of the sentence is in the past tense‚ the tense in the reported statement is changed.
