Это называется Compound Past Form, залог - действительный, а не страдательный.

Гм... А в чем грамматическое отличие от "the cat was black". Или это тоже Compound Past Form?
насчёт правил точно не скажу, но это нормально. в смысле поймут вообще-то)
с точки зрения грамматики - пассивный
