Physical Education is needed for a balanced school week. It not only keeps the students healthy but also gives them a fun break of other schoolwork. For some academically challenged students it gives a chance to excel. In general, it builds team spirit.
Students who are in school need a break from normal brain thinking, otherwise they lack concentration and they will not be able to sustain their lessons. The best way to do this is by sports. This can be done anywhere easily. Anyone is able to participate in sports and since a P.E. program in school offers different kinds of sports, such as teams sports like basketball or individual sports like gymnastics, every student finds his favourite kind and a platform to excel. In general, academically weak students are able to excel in sports and are challenged to improve their abilities. Furthermore, P.E. builds teamwork and unites the class as a group, leaving cultural or social backgrounds behind. In doing sports on a regular basis, students become fitter and, thus, their self-esteem is increased. But most importantly, it is fun. Many students who don’t have the opportunity to participate in physical activities outside of school are thankful to do sports in school. If students enjoy school they are more likely to care about their education in general and in doing so improve their schoolwork. Some people argue about the fact that school should only be work and not fun because they are two very different things. The time should be used to study instead of doing P.E. Just the contrary is true: there are schools where students have P.E. lessons every day. These students compared to others who only have P.E. only once or twice a week achieve higher scores academically. Teachers and other people in charge of curricula should bear this in mind.
If you want a fitter and smarter nation with less health problems P.E. should be on the school curriculum every day. This is in the best interest for everyone.
