The State Armoury Museum in the Moscow Kremlin is one of Russia's oldest museums. It has the biggest collection of masterpieces in the decorative applied arts of both Russian and foreign workmanship. They are evidence not only of an eventful history bit also of a highly rich national culture.

The earliest mention of the Armoury as of a repository of arms and royal treasures goes bask to 1547. It the next two centuries it began to play the role not of a treasury but also of Russian orts and handicrafts centre. Later the Kremlin treasury and art workshops were merged into what was known as workshops and Armoury Chambers, then in 1806 it became a public museum, called the Armoury. It 1851 architect Konstantin Ton erected a special building to house the whole collection; it stands by the Kremlin’s Borovitsky Gate.
