Sherlock Holmes suddenly turned to Watson and said, "The owner of this stick has a dog which is larger than a terrier and smaller than a mastiff." Watson was surprised. He asked, "How do you know\ have you known?"
"I examined that stick carefully and noticed the marks of a dog's teeth on it," answered Holmes. "They are too broad for a terrier and not broad enough for a mastiff. I suppose the dog often carrys the stick behind its master. I suppose it is a spaniel, in fact it is a spaniel."
Holmes left the breakfast table and stood near the window as he was saying this. Watson looked at him in surprise and asked how he could be so sure of that.
"I am sure of it because I see the dog at our door and I hear the bell which its master is ringing. I wonder why Dr Mortimer wants to see Mr Sherlock Holmes. Well, we shall soon know). "Come in," he added. There was a knock at the door. The door opened and Dr Mortimer appeared in the doorway.

два варианта могут подойти.. .
можно и в обычном прошедшем, например-Mr Sherlock Holmes sat,а можно was sitting
и дальше: может быть Past Perfect или просто Past
