2. Creative artists should always be given the freedom to express their own ideas (in words, pictures, music or film) in whichever way they wish. There should be no government restrictions on what they do. To what extent do you agree or disagree?(Cambridge IELTS 4)
Musicians, artists, actors, film directors, poets, and novelists have historically played a crucial role in the development of the society. And yet, there has often been attempts by authorities to censor art. The aim of this censorship was to restrict freedom of expression by cultural figures and to limit the access of the public to new ideas.
I don't fully agree that all culture figures' ideas to be restricted. Art should not be censored or restricted. For example, compare talented Russian poet Alexander Pushkin and youth movie which was broadcasted on Russian TV.
The great Russian poet Pushkin lived on the break of 18th and 19th century. his poems are still enjoyed and admired by people not only in Russia but in other countries as well, he was very popular in his time and loved by all bar the elite of his time. He wrote many poems praising democratic principles and values, calling for equality of all people. Most of his poems were censored and he was forbidden to publish, he was sentenced to exile and actually died there. The uncensored version of his drama Boris Gudonov was not performed until 2007. Pushkin was a very influential poet and the goverment understood it quite well. In my view, it is not acceptable if government limits freedom of speech, freedom of expression.
On the other hand, some censorship can be very useful for society. For example, two years ago a youth film was launched on TV. The characters of this film were using offensive and rude words. According to the plot of this film, it is good and fashionable to swear, to change partners frequently, to disrespect adults, and moreover to be antisocial. Thanks to complaints of parent whose children were into this antisocial film and censorship organizations this film was ceased to be broadcasted.
In summary, i believe firmly that some forms of censorships are valuable, censorship correctly applied prevent antisocial behavior, but should not be used to limit freedom of speech and be used to suppress democracy.
