Газовая турбина - тепловой турбинный двигатель, в котором энергия газового потока превращается в механическую работу вращающегося вала. Основной частью газовой турбины является ротор. Газовый поток, вращающий ротор газовой турбины, образуется в результате сжигания в камере сгорания, в которую компрессором подается сжатие воздуха. Основными элементами газотурбинной установки является компрессор, камера сгорания, турбина. Реактивный двигатель - тепловой двигатель, где химическая энергия от сгорания топлива превращается в кинетическую энергию газовой струи, вытекающей из реактивного сопла, а сила реакции, которая образуется при этом, непосредственно используется как движущая сила (сила тяги). При работе двигателя давление газа на боковые стенки камеры сгорания взаимно уравновешивается, и лишь давление на закрытую стенку не будет уравновешено (вследствие того, что в противоположной части камеры имеется отверстие). Это уравновешенное давление и представляет собой реактивную силу - силу тяги, действующую в направлении, противоположном направлению исходящей струи газа, и двигает аппарат, на котором установлен двигатель. Современные реактивные двигатели, которые используют для сгорания горючее и окислитель, находящиеся на летательном аппарате, и воздушно-реактивные двигатели, где необходимый для сгорания топлива кислород поступает из атмосферы.

Modern jet engines are divided into rocket engines, which use fuel and oxidizer for combustion, which are in the aircraft, and air-breathing jet engines, where the oxygen, necessary for fuel combustion comes from the atmosphere.
