Артикль a/an употребляется с существительным если:
1. Предмет речи упоминается впервые, это типовой предмет, объект, не единственный в своем роде
2. в составе устойчивых словосочетаний, например to have a shower, to have a rest)

Артикль the употребляется, когда:
1. речь идет об определенном предмете
2. с превосходной степенью прилагательного

Это то, что встречается в данном упражнении, список, конечно, шире.

1. I wrote to her but the letter never arrived. (подразумевается конкретное письмо)

2. Britain is an island. (смысл – один из островов, какой-то остров)

3. What is the name of this village. (имя собственное, название обычно бывает только одно, )

4. Jane is a very nice person. You must meet her. (одна из приятных людей)

5. Montreal is a large city in Canada. (один из городов Канады)

6. What is the largest city in Canada. (превосходная степень прилагательного)

7. "What time is it?" "I don't know. I haven't got a watch." (= any watch, в принципе нет часов)

8. When I went to Rome, I stayed with an/the Italian friend of mine. (2 варианта, скорее всего an, но если у автора фразы только один итальянский друг, и собеседник об этом знает, то разговор идет об определенном, одном-единственном друге)

9. You look very tired. You need a holiday. (какой-то отпуск, отдых)

10. Don't sit on the floor. It's very dirty, (имеется в виду вполне конкретный пол)

11. "Let's go to a restaurant this evening." "That's a good idea. Which restaurant shall we go to?" (какой-нибудь ресторан, собеседник даже уточняет, а в какой мы пойдем? ; одна из хороших идей)

12. Can you turn on the radio, please I want to listen some music. (имеется в виду определенный радиоприемник, вряд ли в комнате их несколько)

13. Tony is in the bathroom. He's having a bath. (обычно ванная комната в кватире одна, но если их несколько, и Вы не уверены, в какой именно сейчас поется Тони, то можно употребить a; to have a bath – устойчивое выражение)

14. This is a nice room, but I don't like the colour of the carpet. (вполне определенный цвет вполне конкретного ковра)

15. We live in an old house near the station. It's two miles from the centre. (один из старых домов, мало ли их; поэтому дальше идет уточнение: возле станции, в двух милях от центра. Раз уточняет, то называет конкретные ориентиры, тут не должно быть нескольких вариантов, поэтому the)
