Thinking about my own answer to this question, I asked a friend of mine his opinion. He has a great sense of humour and he anwered from the position of a child denied some of the simple pleasures of life by his tormenting elders.

"Children shouldn't have to go to school. We should be freely allowed to smoke, watch cartoons, play X-Box and indulge in any variety of drunken orgiatic activities within the realms of our imagination"

After having a good laugh at this, I reflected on the happier moments of my own childhood, realising that as a child, what's important is to learn how to appreciate good acts by others and develop our own sense of responsibility. At the same time a child should be free to express his or her feelings and thoughts in the way best suited to them. This should take place within the appropriate level of parental guidance (preferably minimalistic, but intense) as a background to their development. But perhaps most important for a child is to be in touch with nature. It gives an early appreciation of the preciousness and fragility of life. This will help you to realise later, how privileged you were to reach adulthood and appreciate the wonders of growing up.
