Ответ на последний вопрос:
1 односложные: old - older - the oldest; cold - colder - the coldest (один гласный звук - по транскрипции)
2 двусложные: clevER - cleverer - the cleverest; narrOW - narower - the narrowest; dirtY - dirtier - the dirtiest
но большинство двусложных образует степени сравнения при помощи MORE, THE MOST
3 многосложные (три и более слогов - три и более гласных звука) interesting - more interesting - the most interesting

Рыжик! Односложные прилагательные образуют сравнительную степень с помощью суффикса er, а превосходную - с помощью суффикса est. Многосложные - с помощью слов more и the most.
Лень разрушает личность.
Ну неужели неясно, что old 1 слог, а beautiful - не один.
Там, правда есть ещё тонкости с двухсложными.
Некоторые с суффиксами, а некоторые с more/the most.
