Planning a Launch Party

When you get right down to it, planning a launch party isn't so different from booking/promoting a regular show. In fact, a lot of people simply book a gig, dub it a launch party and get on with it.

Nothing wrong with that, really, except you're missing out on the cool thing about launch parties - they really CAN be parties. This is your chance to go out on a limb and do some things at your show that you don't do at your usual gigs because they would involve too much planning/too much money/would just be plain weird to do repeatedly.

Yes, every show should be special, but this is special special. If a regular show is like, say, a 24th birthday party, your launch party is like one of the biggies - a 21st bday, a 30th, a 40th...you get the picture.

I'm sure you've been to a launch party where the band did something really unusual to get people excited about the new music. A few things I've seen over the years that pop to mind:

Giving away food - this seems to be fairly popular - cupcakes, bags of candy, pizza parties are all things I've seen.
Raffles - prizes including copies of the new music and merch, of course.

One thing that comes to mind is a band raffling off a chance for house concert/dinner party - the band would come over, cook dinner for you and your guests and perform a set. Raffle tickets were sold to raise money for charity (though you could certainly hand them out in exchange for mailing list addresses).

Costume contests
Trivia contests

You're really limited only by your imagination (and the tolerance of the venue) here. The point is to create an event that is special and that stands out as more than your usual show. Not only is it fun for you, but it helps get people through the door because it's something different.

It also gives the press a reason to cover your show. You want your fans walking out excited about the time they've had - which in turn will make them excited about your new music and blabbing about it everyone they know they next morning.
