Как же все таки переводится с английского слово abandon?

в 1 словаре переводится как покидать, в другом как отказываться от. . .
Так как же?

Исходя из контекста.
Например, "her natural mother had abandoned her at an early age" - отказыватся.
"To abandon the sinking ship" - покидать.
