Halloween is almost here. Although it's only one night a year, Halloween is one of the biggest and most beloved holidays in North America. People spend a lot of money on costumes, sweets and jewelry, everyone is preparing for this event. The main goal is not only to share goodies, but also to scare each other. People dress up as fictional, bloodthirsty creatures that terrify random passers-by. But there are many countries in the world that see this holiday as a day of respect for the departed, and not just a fun masquerade holiday.

Austria

In Austria, on Halloween, people leave water, bread and a lit lamp on the tables just before going to bed. It is believed that on this night it will contribute to the return of dead souls to Earth. Austrian Catholics use this time to celebrate Seleenwoche, also known as All Saints' Week, between October 30th and November 2nd. During this time, families decorate the graves of their loved ones with lanterns and wreaths. On the last day of Seleenwoche, large funeral masses are held in churches.

China

In China, Halloween is called Deng Jie and it is held every year. On this day, the Chinese put food and water in front of photos of their deceased relatives. Bonfires and lanterns are also lit, burning in the hope of showing the spirits the way back to Earth. In Buddhist temples, they make paper boats called "boats of the law", which are later burned in the evening. This is done for two reasons: in memory of the dead and for the liberation of the spirits of the "pretam" so that they can ascend to heaven. "Prets– are the spirits of those who died in an accident and whose bodies were never buried. These wandering spirits are considered dangerous, and therefore many perform rituals to help them on their journey to the afterlife.

England

Instead of carving faces on pumpkins for Halloween, beets are carved in England and called "punkies". Then the kids take "Punkies" and go door to door asking for money. In some areas, lanterns are installed in these carved turnips in the front of the house to scare away spirits that wander at night on Halloween. According to another custom, stones, chestnuts and vegetables are thrown into the fire, also in the hope of scaring away spirits. Divination is also carried out. For example, if a pebble was thrown into a fire and was no longer visible the next morning, then it was believed that the person who threw the pebble would not survive one year. Now more and more British children are embracing the American tradition of celebrating Halloween.

France

The French did not celebrate Halloween in honor of the deceased until recently. Although they had heard about Halloween from foreigners and the American media, the French did not celebrate Halloween until the mid-1990s. Now, just like on American Halloween, the French dress up in costumes and go from house to house to get candy. Halloween is considered an American holiday and for this reason many French residents do not know what exactly is being celebrated.

Irish

Most people consider Ireland to be the birthplace of Halloween, and this really seems to be true. Here, the traditions of celebration are not so different from the well-known celebrations of American Halloween. As in the States, the Irish dress up as monsters, scare the neighbors, go to parties and beg for candy. The Snap-Apple game is very popular on this day. The apple is suspended from a tree or a door frame, and then the participants of the game try to jump up and take a bite out of it.
