это комплекс обжект в пассиве?
как бы вы составили данное предложение в пассиве симпл.

что-то типа mathematical knowledge is being acquired - тут уже appeare нигде не уместить ведь?

Это Complex Subject с Infinitive Indefinite Passive. Is being acquired - Present Continuous Passive Voice. Инфинитива Continuous Passive не существует.
