Question: What kind of music do you like?
Katie Leclerc: I really like folk music. I just went to a festival called Outsidelands. I really like rock music. I’m going to go see The Black Keys when they come to L.A.
Question: How did you get the role on Switched at Birth?
Katie Leclerc: I found out about it through my agent, and I came in for an audition. I was really nervous! I remember the day that I left the screen test, which is the final audition, I went home. I was so nervous during my audition that I sweat through my armpits and left a stain! I’m so glad they overlooked it!
Question: Have you ever been picked on or teased growing up? If so, what advice do you have for kids who get bullied?
Katie Leclerc: Most definitely. I was severely bullied in middle school—so much so that my family moved to California. If someone’s going through something similar to that, they should find an ally in an adult and inform someone about what’s happening. It’s hard to open up and share when you’re feeling vulnerable, but you need someone on your side.
Question: What was your biggest struggle when perusing acting?
Katie Leclerc: There’s a lot of rejection in acting. They say an actor books one in 60 auditions, and you’re lucky if you get 60 auditions in a year. At one point, I moved to San Antonio for a while before realizing I needed to be in L.A. And then a year later, I booked Switched at Birth!
Question: Besides acting which you are great at, are there any other fields you would like to pursue?
Katie Leclerc: If I stayed in the entertainment industry, I would be a production designer. Otherwise, I would be a chef.
Question: If you could play anyone else on the show for an episode, who would you play?
Katie Leclerc: Toby because he’s a rockstar!
Question: I am learning sign language right now, thanks to Katie and Sean for inspiring me, and I was just wondering about how long and how much dedication it really takes to become fluent?
Katie Leclerc: It’s different for everyone. For me, it took about two years before I felt comfortable. But the way to do it is to go out and be in the deaf culture because you’ll learn more from the environment than you can from a classroom. And it’s kind of scary!
Question: What was your favorite subject when you were in school?
Katie Leclerc: I had a really great English teacher, and the subject wasn’t necessarily my favorite, but the teacher definitely was. And I spent all of my free time in the drama classroom.
Question: Since the show is based off of characters, who are currently in high school do you have any school tips for us freshman?
Katie Leclerc: Don’t procrastinate. And try to get involved in after school actives.
Question: What advice would you have for a woman your age that wants to get involved with the entertainment industry but doesn’t have much experience? Thank you for your time and for being an inspiring actress.
Katie Leclerc: I think the most important part is to be involved in a really good acting class where you can stretch your acting muscles in an environment where you feel comfortable. And you have to make sure your headshot is super, super good. People overlook that too much!
Question: My best friend has been learning how to sign through the show. Do you have any advice or tips for?
Katie Leclerc: You can check out the ASL Lesson on the Switched at Birth video page with Lucas Grabeel (Toby). And there are plenty of resources online!
