The Internet is very popular now. We hear about it from everywhere: from books, from TV and radio programmes. But is it really an important thing? It is often said that computers and especially the Internet make people’s relationships. Is it true? Or is this only a popular theme to talk about? I think that the Internet is a very important invention. Its appearance opened a new era, an era of communication, as the apparition of telegraph or mobile phones. So, having a computer connected to the telephone line, you can access to any computer site that is part of the World Wide Web (WWW). During only some minutes you can find out the latest news, the weather for tomorrow; you can receive new updates about computer programmes, you can use some on-line guides, you can virtually visit countries, cities and museums. You can play games, take part in conferences together with people from all over the world. The Internet is very useful when you have to find quickly some up-to-date information and you do not want to pay much money. So as I was preparing a report about famous DANONE company I simply “went” to www.danone.fr and got the necessary facts about it. But what about friendship? Maybe people will prefer to contact with their computers and not with their friends? I really do not think so. The live communication will never be replaced by virtual contacts. Moreover the Internet will help everybody to find and have friends in different parts of the world. Here is an example from life. Two years ago I travelled on a ship with a group of American students. We spent a lot of time together. But when they came back to the USA, it was not interesting to write letters to each other using traditional post. It was awfully dull to wait during weeks or even months for the answer from your friend. Te Internet gave us a solution of our problem. We decided to use the electronic mail system (or email). It is very simple: using a simple text editor you type your message and with a special programmes you send your e-letter to the electronic address of your friend or partner by the lines of the Internet. You can also attach to your letter a graphic, sound or video file. And, what is the most fantastic thing, your friend will receive a message in two or three minutes! And (it is very important to say) this is much more cheaper than sending a traditional letter or phoning, for example, to America. The digital technologies will be developed in the next millennium. And, as the citizens of our science and civilization.
