When Jerusha entered Mrs. Lippett’s office, the latter’s face wore an expression almost as pleasant as the one she used for visitors.
Mrs. Lippett said she had something to tell her and asked Jerusha to sit down.
Jerusha dropped into the nearest chair and waited with a touch of breathlessness.
Mrs. Lippett inquired whether Jerusha had seen the gentleman who had gone then.
Jerusha said that she had seen his back.
The matron said that the gentleman was one of their richest Trustees, and had given large sums of money for the asylum’s support. She was not at liberty to mention his name as he had insisted on remaining unknown.
Jerusha’s eyes widened slightly; she was not accustomed to being called to the office to discuss the eccentricities of Trustees with the matron.

Mrs. Lippett said that the gentleman had taken an interest in several of their boys. She had never been able to interest him in the slightest degree in any of the girls in the institution.
But luckly for Jerusha Mr. -,that was, the gentleman who had gone – appeared to have a good sense of humor. On the strength of Jerusha's essay entitled ‘Blue Wednesday’ he had offered to send her to college.
Jerusha’s eyes grew big, she could not believe and asked the matron to repeat.
Mrs. Lippett nodded.
She said that he had waited to discuss the terms with her. They were unusual. The gentleman believed that Jerusha had originality and he was planning to educate her to become a writer.’
Jerusha’s mind was numbed. She could not believe, she could only repeat Mrs. Lippett’s words.
