Social networking is something that most of us are involved in. It is the hottest online trend of the last few years. But does it really have as many advantages as people think it does? Have you ever thought about the effect it can have on us? It may seem, at first, that it brings only benefits, but further consideration shows that it also has negative effects.
On the positive side of social networking is Worldwide Connectivity. It is now easier than ever to keep in contact with old friends and colleagues. No matter if you are searching for a former college roommate, your first grade teacher, or an international friend, there is no easier or faster way to make a connection than via the social network. It's the quickest way to exchange news and get updated on friends and families. Social networking gives you an opportunity to share your experiences by uploading the videos. By using social network sites you can easily make a circle which can be very helpful to you in your future life. Another advantage is Commonality of Interests. When you opt to participate in a social network community, you can pick and choose those individuals whose likes and dislikes are similar to yours and build your network around those commonalities. What is more, social networking provides Free Advertising. There's no better way to get your message in front of millions of people 24/7 (twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week). The best part is that you can spread the word through social networking profiles for free. Besides, social networking has revolutionized the speed of the news cycle. Many news organizations now partner with social networking sites like Twitter, YouTube, and Facebook in order to both collect and share information. Users can easily gain the information about anything by using social networks.
On the other hand, the advantages of these social communities have a reverse side effect that is also a big disadvantage of social networking: they reduce or eliminate face-to-face socialization. While it is hard to say no, be rude, or ignore someone when you are looking them in the eye, it's incredibly easy and quick to unfriend or unfollow someone or simply block their efforts to make a connection. Unfortunately, this feature of online socialization cheats people of the opportunity to learn how to resolve conflicts in the world outside the Internet and it could retard or cripple one's social skills developments. Tweens and teens are at higher risk because those years are when they are learning to interact with others or build and maintain relationships. Furthermore, the use of social networks can expose individuals to harassment or inappropriate contact from others. The downside also includes Risks of Fraud or Identity Theft. Whether you like it or not, the information you post on the Internet is available to almost anyone who is clever enough to access it. One of the biggest disadvantages is that social networking can be a big waste of time, especially with youngsters, who become addicted to playing videogames and chatting online. The time you spend interacting online could be put to better use.
All in all, while social networking DOES have its advantages, because people can benefit from it in many ways, it shouldn't be the only way of communication or getting information. It can also do a great deal of harm. And people should be aware of this before joining different sites or interest groups. In evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of social networking, it's best to err on the side of caution and information. After all, the lack of both can have a devastating effect.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Networking

There are many different opinions to social networks. Some think it is stupid to share every single thought with the world even if it is very unnecessary, some think that it is the best way to tell your friends what you are doing or to see what they are going to do. People and society is always fighting about whether there are more risks or useful opportunities.

A big advantage of social networks is, that you can stay in touch with your friends and family from all around the world. So, you can send them a picture or post some funny videos on their “wall” to make them see it. For example, if your son or your daughter is living maybe somewhere in the US and he/she has a child that you are barely seeing in Austria, it’s wonderful to have a social network like Facebook, where you see some new photographs and some important information about your proper grandchild’s childhood.

Another huge benefit is that if you press “like” or “follow” on pages or blogs that you are interested to, you always get the newest piece of information and you always be up to date. Also, you know about every event from your favourite band, for instance. You will be informed about the bar, the club or the stadium where they have their gig. Thus, you will be as close as possible on your star’s life.

The probably worst disadvantage of social networks is that your whole life is saved on the internet forever. That means, nothing can be completely removed from your browser. If you are on social networks, everyone can find you there. So, it’s a big risk of being stalked by someone dangerous. They may find out where you live to rape or injure you because of such strange reasons, that not even them could complain it logically.

The social networks are making you lazy too. You will spend too much time on reading blogs and writing statuses. However, in this time you could have gone to a public place or something else to meet your friends. Also, your grades at school may get worse because you spend your time for studying on browsing through the world wide web searching for new pieces od information or things to share with your friends. You soon can become addicted to social networks, which is obviously not good, but if you are careful and still use your free time spending with your friends and books for school, everything is alright.

My own opinion is, that social networks are fundamental a very good thing, because you have all your friends, not essential how far they are away, “around” you. I use some networks even everyday and I try nit to post too much information about my location or my plans. Despite the big disadvantages, I will still use my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., because sometimes I need just pieces of information of things I am really interested to.

After all, you will see that if you use your networks or in general personal stuff wisely, it is not a problem if you share some things with people you like. Therefore, a huge tip is to just accept people to see you profiles if you really know and like them. Otherwise, you have to count with many disadvantages.
