Сказать, что у вас будет после number of these thrillers: are или is - не представляется возможным, поскольку мы не видим, что стоит перед number, точнее - какой артикль: определённый или неопределённый. Это очень важно. От него собственно будет зависеть выбор формы глагола сказуемого.

This reasoning is the same with "the number of students is..." and "a number of students are..."
