Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (published in the United States as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone) is the first novel in the Harry Potter series written by J. K. Rowling and featuring Harry Potter, a young wizard. It describes how Harry discovers he is a wizard, makes close friends and a few enemies at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and with the help of his friends thwarts an attempted come-back by the evil wizard Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents and tried to kill Harry when he was one year old.

The book was published on 30 June 1997 by Bloomsbury in London, and in the USA under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by Scholastic Corporation in 1998. It won most of the UK book awards that were judged by children, and other awards in the USA, reached the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999, and stayed near the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000. It has been translated in to several other languages, including Ancient Greek, and has been made into a feature-length film of the same name.

Most reviews were very favourable, commenting on Rowling's imagination, humour, simple, direct style and clever plot construction, although a few complained that the final chapters looked rushed. The writing has been compared to that of Jane Austen, one of Rowling's favourite authors, of Roald Dahl, whose works dominated children's stories before the appearance of Harry Potter, and of the Ancient Greek story-teller Homer. While some commentators thought the book looked backwards to Victorian and Edwardian boarding school stories, others thought it placed the genre firmly in the modern world by featuring contemporary ethical and social issues.

The Philosopher’s Stone is the first in J.K. The books are read and enjoyed by children and adults alike and have also been made into hugely popular films.

When I first began reading the Philosopher’s stone I was immediately struck by how good – and laugh-out-loud funny – the humour was. Rowling has managed to infuse this book with a lovely wit and charm that will both amuse and delight adults and children.

There are characters in this book that will remind us of all the people we have met. Everybody knows or knew a spoilt, overweight boy like Dudley or a bossy and interfering (yet kind-hearted) girl like Hermione. A large number of the younger readers will also be able to easily identify with Harry. One can easily understand his initial feelings of isolation and not belonging, and then – his excitement at finally leaving that life behind in favour of one where he belongs and will be happy.

Hogwarts is a truly magical place, not only in the most obvious way but also in all the detail that the author has gone to describe it so vibrantly. And there many adventures befall the trio (Harry, Ron and Hermione) and the stone in the book's title is centre to all that happens. The story comes to an exciting conclusion that has the ultimate feel-good factor.

J.K. Rowling should be commended for getting so many people reading and excited by books. This book is highly recommended to anybody between the ages of 8 and 80.

Большинство молодых читателей без труда смогут понять Гарри. Так легко понять его первоначальное состояние одиночества и отчужденности – вплоть до воодушевления, когда он наконец-то покидает привычную жизнь ради той, где он нужен и где будет счастлив.

Хогвартс – по-настоящему волшебное место не только внешне, но и во всех деталях, которые автор так живо описывает. Там-то с троицей (Гарри, Роном и Гермионой) происходит много приключений, а камень, упомянутый в заголовке книги, является центром всех происшествий. У этой истории захватывающий конец, оставляющий очень хорошее чувство на душе.

Дж. К. Роулинг достойна похвалы за то, что смогла привлечь такое количество людей к чтению и восхищению своими книгами. Эта книга рекомендуется к прочтению всем от 8 до 80 лет.
