This is an Antique R 1-9 Front Destination Rollsign section. This sign came from the R 1-9 cars of the IND subway, which were built in many waves by a few different builders (American Car & Foundry, Pullman, and Pressed Steel - between 1930 and 1940. T were over 1800 built. The last of them were retired and scrapped in the 1970s. A few still exist as part of museum collections, including the New York City Transit Museum and the Shoreline Trolley Museum in East Haven, CT.
Each car had two "signboxes" at each end of the car. Each signbox housed a full rollsign. The one on the left displayed the route, while the one on the right displayed the destination.
This sign section is one panel (two destinations) of the IND (Independent City Owned Subway). The full sign comprised of many of these panels stitched together. The rollsign measures 19 inches wide by about 30 inches long. Readings include the following:
HOUSTON - 2ND AVE
HUDSON TERMINAL
The 2nd Avenue station at Houston Street is the current southern destination of the V Train. This station was part of the group of IND lines that opened in 1936. At the time, this station was not a destination. Rather, it was part of the 1929 IND "Second System plan for the line to be extended from through a new tunnel into Brooklyn.
According to a 1937 IND map, the Hudson Terminal station was the southern destination of the CC 8th AVE local. This stop was just a short distance from the Hudson and Manhattan station. When the twin towers were built, the station name was changed to "The World Trade Center." This stop is the current southern destination of the E Train. This sign is in excellent shape. T are no tears in the sign. T is a stain that appears to be a mistake in the printing around the "TERM" - please see the close up photo. T is little to no subway grime.
