Purpose - скорее имеет значение "смысл". Например, What is the purpose of this device? Какой смысл в это устройстве? (Какая цель у этого устройства?).
Aim - чаще используется как глагол (целиться), но может и использоваться в качестве существительного (процесс прицеливания).
Target - обозначает цель в смысле "объект прицеливания".

я по этой теме писала курсовую работу. Все эти слова входят в одно семантическое поле, то есть имеют схожее значение. При этом какие-то из них имеют более сильное, а другие более слабое значение.
