Вот есть слово this - это, а есть that - тот

This- перед глазами, that- дистанция, расстояние.

that - то, что удалено по расстоянию (that building) или времени (that year), либо либо недоступно или трудно для восприятия (that phenomena).

потому что тот - это прошедшее время, что-то, что было где-то там, а здесь уже нет.
А этот - значит что то, о чём ты говоришь находится прямо перед глазами.

всё очень просто: that - это, this - вот это.
Вот это стол - на нём сидят. Вот это стул - его едят!

Nearness and farness is only one use of this and that. Or the use of this when it is in relationship to "my" and of "that" when it is in relationship to "your".
But in a lot of cases there is no distinction between two things at different places. "that" is the stronger of the two demontratives.
That silly friend of yours. - Deprecating use. I think here "that" is preferred to "this".

Grammars, especially school grammars, treat this grammar point on a low school level. In reality the idiomatic use of this and that is a complicated thing and a study of this problem would be a whole chapter. There are cases where native speakers prefer one of the two demonstratives, and there are cases where either of the two is possible.

Лично мне нравится объяснение насчет того, что that звучит сильнее, чем this, точнее чаще используется в таких случаях.

«THIS» используется при указании на предмет/объект/лицо, находящееся в непосредственной близости.
«THAT» указывает на лицо/предмет/объект, отдалённый по местоположению.
