Нельзя.
В приведенной выше ссылке есть более существенное замечание:
A double possessive is not OK if the second possessive is inanimate.

Смотрим в словаре определение it:
You use it to refer to an object, animal, or other thing that has already been mentioned. Ключевое слово thing. Животное относится к неодушевленным объектам. Period.

Трудно понять из фрагмента фразы, о чем идет речь. Its притяжательное местоимение, за которым обычно следует что-то. Его что? Если перевести ваш вопрос на русский.

говорят of this или of that... ну на крайний случай of it.

Если про кошку, то OF HERS; про кота - OF HIS .
Уж коль речь о таких возвышенных чувствах! Как у Киплинга "The Cat that...

Если у кошки есть друзья, то это точно он или она
Her friend, His friend, A friend of hers, A friend of his....
