Почему в "Exuse me for coming late" употребляется EXUSE а не SORRY? Ведь речь об уже произошедшем, а не предстоящем

Sorry for coming late тоже можно.
Разница как между "извините" и "простите"

I am sorry, I am late - я огорчен, что опоздал.
Excuse my coming late - извините за опоздание.
I apologize for coming late - я извиняюсь за опоздание

Не знаю, где вы такое прочитали, но это неправда.

Действие, которое только только предстоит совершить после извинения, выражают формой инфинитива после sorry.
I'm sorry to interrupt/disturb/bother/trouble/you, but I need your help.
Действие, которое уже совершилось к моменту извинения, выражают либо перфектной формой инфинитива, либо герундием.
I'm sorry to have interrupted/disturbed/bothered/troubled you.
= I’m sorry for interrupting/disturbing/bothering/troubling/you.

Но несмотря на то, что exuse me в основном служит либо для привлечения внимания, либо для переспроса, очень часто можно встретить в устойчивых выражениях извинения:
Excuse my back. (Извините, что стою к вам спиной)
Excuse my gloves. (Когда здороваетесь в перчатках. = Excuse my wearing gloves.)

Поэтому ваш вариант допустим, наряду с теми, что предложили выше ответившие.

Про предстоящее и произошедшее говорил Хабенский с какой-то серии "Убойной силы". Теперь многие "по фильмам" язык учат, так что удивляться нечего.
