Почему в этом предложении слово covered переводится как пройдут. Когда само по себе оно так не переводится?

They will have covered 30 km by sunset.
пройдут. - это вольный перевод, чтобы русские поняли
а так переводится, как ПОКРЫТЬ, покрыть путь в 30 км до восхода солнца

"покроют" 30 км (у нас так же говорят))
А перевод слишком вольный.
Не пройдут, а покроют путь в 30 км. Смысл правда не меняется...
А в чем затруднение? До рассвета они пройдут 30 километров. Переводить-то нужно по смыслу, а не по словам.

Заметил, что это слово чаще используется при поиске или спасении кого- либо, или при исследовательской работе. Cover - крышка, покрытие. Прошли и закрыли этот этап.
